Press Release announcing Candidacy for Mayor

PRESS RELEASE April 22, 2010

I decided to run for Mayor of San Luis Obispo late last week. Before I could make that commitment, I needed to free up the time required to do the job right.  Therefore, I decided to retire from my law practice in order to devote full time to the job of Mayor.

I am motivated by the wish to serve the San Luis Obispo community and protect our quality of life.  I have the skill, experience, long time community involvement and personal commitment to lead the city.  I will work hard to preserve residents’ priorities and the city’s coffers, during the difficult financial times ahead.  Some of my more specific goals are encouraging economic vitality, preserving and improving the Downtown, protecting the quality of our neighborhoods, supporting our open space and bicycle trails programs, working with Cal Poly and the Chamber to encourage local, innovative green businesses, and Master Planning the Calle Joaquin Agricultural Preserve, among others.

My qualifications for Mayor include my present service on the City Council. As the city’s representative on the San Luis Obispo Council of Governments (SLOCOG), San Luis Obispo Regional Transportation Agency (SLORTA) and the Air Pollution Control District, I have a up-to-date perspective on the importance of regional planning decisions to the city’s future. From 1998-2002 I served as a City Council Member and earlier on the City Planning Commission, County Parks and Recreation Commission and Economic Opportunity Commission.

I am also a business person, having owned my own law practice since 1993.  My BA is from Stanford, M.A. from Columbia University and law degree from Santa Clara University.  I am a member of the County Bar Association, Women Lawyers’ Association and the San Luis Obispo Rotary Club.  I am married with two grown children and four grandsons
