About Jan

Jan was elected Mayor in 2010, 2012 and 2014.  She served as a City Councilmember from 1998 to 2002 and was re-elected to Council in 2008.  In 2016, she was elected President of the County -wide San Luis Obispo Council of Governments (SLOCOG) and the San Luis Obispo Regional Transportation Agency (SLORTA). She also serves on the Air Pollution Control District (APCD). She is the chief negotiator with the Airport Land Use Commission to resolve issues of housing in the annexation areas. She owned her own business for 17 years and practiced estate planning, real property and local government law. She also taught Business Law at Cal Poly.

Jan has earned degrees from University of Santa Clara Law School (J.D.); Stanford University (B.A.), and Columbia University (M.A.). She is a former Deputy District Attorney with extensive training in mediation and negotiation. She has been in charge of budgets as Assistant Dean of Graduate Student Housing at Stanford University and Dean of Students at Scripps College and studied municipal law and finance in law school. She established and ran a community college branch in a remote area of Canada. A San Luis Obispo homeowner since 1988, she is married to retired Cal Poly Professor Steven Marx. They have two grown children, four grandsons and a big tiger-striped rescue cat.
